How We Find and Qualify Structural Steel Bids
A transparent look at what the digest searches, what earns a steel-scope tag, how often records change, and what remains outside its reach.
Sources checked
The collection pipeline checks official state DOT lettings and results, statewide procurement registries, public legal-notice networks, university and municipal bid pages, selected commercial-building permit systems, federal SAM.gov opportunities, and state economic-development announcements. The 12-state service area is Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
How a project qualifies
A construction notice does not become a structural steel lead just because it contains the word “steel.” The title and available scope text are evaluated for evidence tied to CSI MasterFormat sections 05 12 00 Structural Steel Framing, 05 21 00 Steel Joist Framing, 05 31 00 Steel Decking, and 05 50 00 Metal Fabrications. Evidence and confidence travel with the record so an estimator can distinguish primary framing from a smaller miscellaneous-metals package.
Update and verification workflow
- Polite, rate-limited collectors read the issuing source and preserve its canonical link.
- Stable source identifiers prevent the same record from being inserted again on every run.
- Changed dates, scope, estimates, and document links refresh the existing record.
- Steel-scope tagging is rerun against the latest title and description.
- Health checks flag source failures and unusual stretches of zero new results.
What is not fully covered
No public-source digest can claim every structural steel project. Private negotiated work, invitation-only plan rooms, projects published only inside commercial services, and small jurisdictions without accessible digital records create real gaps. Permit coverage is deliberately an early signal and currently represents selected cities rather than every building department. The digest should therefore be used for discovery, not as a substitute for an agency's solicitation, addenda, or a contractor's own plan-room relationships.
Statewide procurement expansion
Direct collection now includes the North Carolina electronic Vendor Portal, Virginia eVA construction board, Florida's Vendor Information Portal, Louisiana's LaPAC, South Carolina Business Opportunities, and Arkansas's current SAS/SAP Business Network board plus the legacy ARBuy grids during the transition. These statewide boards complement DOT, legal-notice, permit, university, and municipal feeds; broad procurement records still must pass the same steel-scope qualification before appearing as a steel lead.
How to use a lead safely
Open the official-source link, confirm the current bid date and time, read every addendum, verify licensing and prequalification requirements, and obtain the actual plans and specifications before pricing. If a site record conflicts with the issuing source, the issuing source controls. Report a stale or incorrect listing so it can be reviewed.
